Lab 3: Memory Chunking
Background: From Wikipedia
In cognitive psychology and mnemonics, chunking refers to a strategy to make more efficient use of short-term memory by recoding information.... Chunking means to organize items into familiar manageable units.
The theory is that by chunking, and having to remember fewer units, the individual can remember more information overall.
Goals: In this lab you will analyze whether “chunking” sequences of letters into familiar groups increases students’ ability to remember a sequence of 30 letters. You will use technology to produce graphical and numerical summaries to compare the two groups (ideas from Topics 7-9). You will also carry out a simulation of the random assignment process assuming there is no treatment effect to help you decide whether the observed difference between the two groups is statistically significant.
