Descriptive Statistics

After collecting the data, the next step is to produce some numerical and graphical summaries of the sample data. The goal is to summarize the overall patterns in the data. Here we don’t want to just present a bunch of yeses and no’s but a simple number and a picture or two that best represent the overall story we learn from the data.

Numerical Summary

(a) From the data in the Excel file, you can see that 14 of the 16 infants chose the helper toy. Use your calculator to determine the sample proportion (report the decimal between 0 and 1 to three places) and the sample percentage of infants that chose the helper toy.

Note: Either of these values could be considered the statistic in this study.
