Not Confidence

(k) Reconsider the data in the Excel file. Determine how many and what proportion of these 81 observations are contained in the 95% confidence interval. Is this percentage close to 95%? Should it be?

To see what 95% really refers to, suppose you have a Normally distributed population with mean 60 and standard deviation 20.

(l) In the applet below, use the Method pull-down menus to select Means, Normal, t, and enter the above mean and standard deviation parameter values with a sample size of 80. Generate 1000 intervals. Include a screen capture of your results.

What percentage of these 1000 intervals contain the actual parameter value of 60? Is this what you expected? Explain - giving an interpretation of what we mean by "95% confidence."
