How much class time do you spend going over the exam afterwards? What do you discuss (e.g., the entire exam, the most difficult problems, how the exam was scored)? How specifically do you discuss student responses to exam questions after they have been returned? What information do you convey to students about score distributions? Do you give them access to an exam key? What other types of feedback do you give them about their exam performance? (Do you write comments on the exams, correct their mistakes, or just indicate points? Do you consider students as losing points for mistakes or as gaining points with correct answers?)
I don't usually spend much class time going over exams - maybe 10 minutes. I go through the questions and comment on what I observed - indicating whether most students solved the problem correctly or what common mistakes were. I may work one problem if there was one that a lot of students had trouble with.I try to write comments on student exams, but sometimes, if there is a question that a large number of students have trouble with, I may just make a note on the exam referring them to a page that I write up and duplicate for the class. That saves me having to write long explanations over and over again!
Midterms are returned with comments and corrections, but final exams are not returned (university policy - we have to keep them for 1 year). I usually provide the class with the mean and standard deviation of exam scores and usually show either a dot plot or stem-and-leaf display of scores as well.
